The Bike Cave - A Bicycle Cooperative

What we offer

The new Bike Cave opening on February 9, 2009 the Pecos building.  This new location contains 6 fixed bicycle repair work stations; two portable work stations; a truing station; tools, (including bicycle specific tools); bicycle parking; parts and staff to help assist you in making repairs, and much more.

The new Bike Cave is located on the first floor of the Pecos building, room 100.  This location is just east of the Music Building and north of the Pedernales Building.  We offer:

  • Assistance in making bicycle repairs
  • Free access to tools and repair advice from bike cave staff, (priority given to students of Texas State).
  • Low cost, first-come/first served basic tune-up and repair for folks who don’t wish, (or don’t have time), to make their own bicycle repairs.
  • Volunteer training:  Yes, as a volunteer you are just as likely to be asked to sweep floors, inventory tools or bicycles, or install bicycle racks on campus.  However, as time allows, our seasoned bicycle staff will work with volunteers to educate them in how to make basic repairs á la “train-the-trainer”, so that the cycle of knowledge will continue after current staff graduate.
  • Input on future training and repair programs; rewards programs; community outreach; and development of bikeways, bicycle parking, and campus bike amenities.

Bicycle Surplus Sale

The Bike Cave offered their first annual surplus sale of used, reconditioned donated and surplus bicycles.  These bicycles were reconditioned, repaired, and in many cases have had new tires, tubes, brakes and cables added.  The sale ran the week of August 31st on a first-come, first-served basis; the first two days of the sale were reserved for Texas State students only.  The sale ran through September 4th and put 25 bicycles back in service; 24 of these bicycles went to Texas State students.

We will continue to recondition and sell bicycles throughout the semester as they come in on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you are interested, please check back weekly to see what is available.  While this was a first attempt at a large release of reconditioned stock, we will attempt to have another large sale next January, 2010 at the beginning of the Spring 2010 semester.

Thanks to all Students, Faculty, Staff, (and volunteers) for making our first large sale a success!
